The festival also doubles as a charity event, raising money since 2001 for worthy Michigan-based organizations such as the CAID's nonprofit mission, C.O.T.S., Gift of Life, Alternatives for Girls, the Michigan Lupus Foundation, the Chris Kempa Memorial Art Scholarship Fund, and the CAID's Got Art? program. The Summer Smash is known for featuring up-and-coming Michigan bands alongside more established Michigan acts, and performers from out-of-state on tour. No two nights are the same, just as no two years of Summer Smash are the same. Summer Smash is constantly evolving.

The Detroit Summer Smash music festival began in 1999 when a group of Detroit-area music fans decided to organize a three-day music festival in the city of Detroit. That year’s festival was at the Magic Stick on Woodward Avenue, in the legendary Majestic Theater Complex. 1999's festival showcased local legends-in-the-making Red Shirt Brigade, The Sights, Moods for Moderns, Slumber Party, and Outrageous Cherry, along with national touring bands like the Pacific Ocean, Whysall Lane, Por Avion, and Andrew Beaujon.

August 8, 9 & 10th

Light Show Bob presents:

The 9th. The US premiere of the work, which allows audience members to deliver their favorite speeches from Presidential Primary Candidates up to the President himself - Karaoke style- opens on July 30th and 31st at the Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, New York as part of the Buffalo Infringement Festival. The tour will continue cross country throughout August and September.

Developed over 2007/8 and first performed in Weimar, Germany on January 30, 2008, Politaoke has been expanded and updated to include a wide spectrum of contemporary politics and issues relating to the US election in November. While on tour, Diana Arce will be updating and adding speeches in order to stay up to date with the current election.

Politaoke provides the audience a platform to perform, mock and finally hear and see clearly what their politicians say. Completely bipartisan, Politaoke allows the audience to decide how to interpret each politician's words, whether serious or in a sarcastic manner. The politician's speeches and interviews are provided, word for word, only edited into sections (songs) of 1 - 8 minutes. A series of debates, interviews and television appearances are also provided as duets.

The idea, which stemmed out of an interest in Karaoke and a life long love-hate relationship with politics, Diana Arce decided to finally pursue the project in 2007. Growing up in close proximity to Washington DC and having completed her Bachelors in Cultural Studies and Experimental Film, Politaoke is a natural progression in Diana Arce's work as an artist, filmmaker and activist. Currently an MFA candidate in Art in Public Space at the Bauhaus University, Weimar in Germany, Diana is interested in using artistic methods as a platform to engage in political and cultural critique and commentary in the public realm. Much of her work stems not only from her personal experience, but also from contemporary politics, economics and news.

Tour dates are currently being organized in California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Virginia and Washington D.C. with more states and cities to be added. A complete list of tour dates as well as photos from the Weimar event is available on www.politaoke.com.

http://www.politaoke.com
info@politaoke.com

Diana Arce
http://www.visualosmosis.com

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Doors for this event will open at 9PM. The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit has been innovative in the past in the way that they’ve delivered culture, art and music to our community, and this event is sure to be nothing short of just that: innovative. This multi-genre show features an up-and-coming hardcore group from Pontiac, MI called, Burn the Script, who -in the short while they’ve been together- has developed a sound that can adequately be described in one simple word: powerful. These kids are serious musicians on a mission to influence the world through the wonderful sounds of their screaming guitars, pounding double-bass pedals and a main vocal that will make you wish you would’ve learned how to scream, the right way. Before them, however, Andrew Kuchon is set to deliver a semi-acoustic performance, which is basically the combination of his love affair with digital music and his acoustic guitar and voice. Andrew derives a lot of his inspiration from older rock bands like the Velvet Underground, the Beatles, etc. and modern hip hop giants like Nas, Big L, Eminem, Canibus, etc. His voice has a wide range of expressions and nuances and his lyrics are deep enough to make you think about things when you otherwise might not look at it that way. When they encounter squeaky clean couple Tommy (Ray Barlow) and Linda (Sue Bernard), also out for a desert joyride, the girls' invitation to drag race turns ugly. After a fistfight, Varla leaves Tommy for dead and kidnaps Linda. The three dangerous beauties then catch word of a feeble old man (Stuart Lancaster) out in the desert who is reportedly sitting on a large amount of money, and they set out to beat it out of him and his two sons. FASTER, PUSSYCAT!, though made for the raincoat crowd in the mid-1960s, has since transcended its humble origins to become a beloved cult classic. While treading territory similar to MOTORPSYCHO, director Russ Meyer's previous film, PUSSYCAT! turns the convention on its ear with what is possibly the toughest (and most glamorous) trio of femme fatales ever to hit the screen. As Varla, the iconic Satana creates a character who appears to literally fear nothing. While not Meyer's most financially successful film, it's most likely the one (along with 1970's BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS) that he will be remembered for." - Rotten Tomatoes

11:30 - Hell's Belles Girlie Revue
